Fun, creative, pottery sessions for all ages and abilities

At Open Skies Studio I offer a range of project based clay sessions that are designed with fun and creativity in mind.

Projects explore a range of hand-building techniques, that provide an opportunity for everyone to get creative with clay, meet new people and learn a new skill.

Sessions run from the studio and are for a maximum of 8 people at a time.

All equipment and materials are provided, with all finished projects, kiln fired and glazed, ready to be picked up at a later date.

Open Skies Studio

A creative space for all

Open Skies Studio is a welcoming, creative space to come and enjoy the positive benefits of working in clay.

The studio space can accommodate groups of up to 8 people and has a range of tools and equipment suitable for all aspects of hand-building in clay.

Located approximately 1 mile from the village of Cosheston, set in the beautiful Pembrokeshire National Park, the studio has ample parking and space for plenty of outdoor contemplation, and tea breaks!

Slip Decorated Plate Workshop

A 1.5 hour hand-building workshop which explores the use of decorative effects using coloured slips.

The workshop will explore the use of rolled sheets of clay to form a ceramic plate, which can then be decorated using a range of decorative techniques using coloured slips.

During this 1.5 hour workshop everyone will be able to make one slab-formed plate their own, which can be decorated and personalised with coloured slip. Pieces will be decorated in their raw state, then finished with a transparent glaze. These will be ready to collect, after two firings and glazing, a few weeks later.

This Pottery Workshop includes teaching, materials, glazing, firing and refreshments.

Poppy Head Bud Vase Workshop

A 2 hour hand-building workshop which explores the pinching, coiling and modelling process.

The workshop will explore the pinching method, along with adding adding extra clay to create an organic, poppy head inspired, bud vase. Your piece will be altered further to incorporate a decorative opening, carved lines and modelled detail.

During the workshop everyone will be able to make one vessel form of their own. These will be ready to collect, after two firings and glazing, a few weeks later.

Clay Dragon Workshop

A 1.5 hour hand-building workshop for children which will allow them to explore building in clay.

The workshop is suitable for ages 6-16 years, with under 8's needing parental supervision during the session.

During the session everyone will be able to make their very own 'Welsh Dragon' using air-drying clay; which will then allow pieces to be taken away straight away, with no need for firing.

Fully dried creations can then be painted using acrylic paint in your own time, which be supplied to take away with you. Children will have the opportunity to explore building methods, modelling and applying detail.

This Pottery workshop includes teaching, materials, suitable paints for decorating afterwards and carry boxes for transportation.

Coiled Vessel Workshop

A 2.5 hour hand-building workshop which explores the coiling process. 

The workshop will explore the use of coils/ropes of clay to form a range of vessel idea's; for example vases, containers, small planters.

During this 2.5 hour workshop everyone will be able to make one coiled item of their own. You will be able to select an idea to follow, based on your personal preference; for example - plant pot, utensil holder, bud vase, flower vase. These will be ready to collect, after two firings and glazing, a few weeks later.

Miniature Landscape Workshop

A 2 hour hand-building workshop which explores the hand-building and sculpting process in miniature.

The workshop will explore hand-building in clay to build a landscape inspired piece that incorporates elements of modelling and sculpting in miniature. Pieces will take inspiration from the beautiful Pembrokeshire coast and countryside.

During this 2 hour workshop everyone will be able to make one ornamental landscape of their own. These will be ready to collect, after two firings and glazing, a few weeks later.

Ceramic Mug Workshop

A 2 hour hand-building workshop which explores slab-building techniques.

The workshop will slab-building methods to be able to form your very own ceramic mug.

During this 2 hour workshop everyone will be able to make their very own ceramic mug, which can then be decorated and personalised.. You will learn how to safely construct a slab-built form suitable for it's function, and how to apply pattern and decoration onto the surface of the mug. These will be ready to collect, after two firings and glazing, a few weeks later.

Continuing your clay journey!

Hand-building Pottery Course

New this June!

A 8 week hand-building course covering a range of techniques and projects.

If you are looking to explore the joy of hand-building, then this course is for you! It’s an ideal opportunity to get to know clay and be equipped with basic hand-building skills that will enable you to build a range of pieces.

Each session will explore a particular building method and project, with the opportunity to continue with more complex ideas over the space of a couple of sessions.

The sessions will also incorporate glazing of your pieces, with fired pieces collected after the course completion.

Cost includes all relevant tools, materials and firings.
